Royal Aeronautical Society Symposium 2009
February 2nd, 2009Each year, the New Zealand division of the Royal Aeronautical Society presents an annual symposium on subjects of interest to the aviation community in New Zealand and the Pacific region.
On Friday the 13th of March, the 2009 symposium will be held at the James Cook Hotel in Wellington, New Zealand.
Last year’s symposium, “Sustainable Aviation”, focussed on the impact of climate change and its effect upon aviation, because of the perception of aviation as a negative influence on the environment.
This year’s symposium, “Sustainable Travel and Tourism in an Uncertain World”, will continue the environmental theme begun in 2008.
The Society is working to extend its symposium topic beyond aviation, in recognition of the fact that aviation is principally an enabler for New Zealand’s tourism industry.
The contribution of tourism to the New Zealand economy, and the additional role of aviation in exports, has resulted in a programme that the symposium’s organisers say considers energy, emissions and the environment. The programme links these with various aspects of tourism, technology and planning for future infrastructure in light of uncertainty.
The symposium will include a full day of presentations by political and industry leaders on a wide range of closely related topics, including, among others, “Alternative Fuel Solutions”, “Engine Improvements—The Pratt and Whitney Geared Turbofan”, Industry Strategies in Difficult Times” and “Planning for Infrastructure”.
The symposium is not restricted to Royal Aeronautical Society members, but is also open to the general public and aviation industry participants.
